How the Races Were Won from 2006 to 2010

From this point forward, I've changed my mind on how I evaluate races in which one driver passes the previous leader on track during an exchange of green-flag pit stops. For instance in the Champ Car race at Portland in 2007, Sébastien Bourdais passed Justin Wilson on the track for 2nd place while waiting for the temporary leader Will Power to pit. Bourdais made the pivotal pass for the win himself even though it was technically for 2nd place and I decided it was wrong to not count passes like this as natural. I realize that there are likely several Formula One races where there was a pass made for the effective lead on-track that I have listed as off-track because it wasn't for the lead (and unfortunately since Formula One does not allow footage of its races online it would be very difficult for me to verify some of these races) and there were probably some NASCAR races too. There was one CART race that I distinctly remembered while doing this where this same sort of pass was made. Al Unser, Jr. passed Michael Andretti for 2nd place (which was effectively the controlling position of the race since they were only trailing Teo Fabi who needed to pit) and I judged that as an off-track pass, but it wasn't an off-track pass just because it was not for the lead. I am revising that and counting it as a natural pass, but unfortunately I don't remember any of the other circumstances where this occurred and I don't really think I have time to go through all these races again at the moment so I probably won't update the others very soon, especially since I have several ideas for future columns I want to undertake, but it definitely seems wrong in retrospect not to count races where the ultimate lead change was made on-track even if it wasn't for the lead. Unfortunately, there are likely races where the coverage was focusing on whoever was leading rather than the relevant drivers (such as the 1996 NASCAR fall Charlotte event, where I cannot tell whether Terry Labonte passed Ricky Craven on the track or in the pits and neither would surprise me) but if I want this analysis to be as accurate as possible, I have to count passes for the ultimate lead as passes for the lead even if they weren't technically passes for the lead. There is one other race I am changing my judgment on as well. I listed the 2002 Indianapolis 500 as incidental when it should have been off-track as Hélio Castroneves beat Felipe Giaffone out of the pits to take the lead (it is only incidental if you believe Paul Tracy won the race and I don't feel like opening that can of worms). Regardless, it was not a natural win either way. I have not changed the initial judgments in the previous columns, but I have updated the tallies here to reflect these adjustments.
